Crew for Greenland
Diego arrived the 5th. Josh & Hue on the 7th, long flights from New Zealand via Vancouver, BC. Jon took Diego and me in his truck to Hofn to pick them up.
We four had sailed together in 2019. A great group. Over the years since we often commented on how nice it would be to do it again, same group. But I had no expectations of that happening. Amazing!
L - R: Josh Scarrow, Jon Karlsson, me, Diego Lopez. Shot by Hue Tran.
Josh brought a new toilet pump (pictured) for me all the way from New Zealand. My old pumps are black. Here we are wondering why they changed it to white.
Josh, of North Island, New Zealand, 36 is a contamination & hazardous waste specialist. Before, he was a microbiologist specializing in Antarctic bacteria. He has spent around 6 months in the field in the Antarctic, collecting samples. He has the best sailing instincts of anyone I ever met. I would not hesitate to sail under him as skipper.
Jon is not coming. A retired lifelong fisherman, he sailed twice with me, once from Iceland to Ireland, and again a quick trip from Grindavik to Djupivogur. He has bailed out my ass quite a few times, and with nothing more than a quiet smile.
Diego Lopez, at right, 51, from Cartagena, Spain. He does research at the university and has brought a bit of kit to collect data on the seas we pass through. A lifelong sailor, he races lateen rigs in the Mediterranean.
Hue Tran, 52, lives in South Island, New Zealand. She was most recently working for a government weather/climate agency. She spent four years in Antarctica, in a technical support role, where she met Josh. Though not a sailor, she loves to catch, clean & cook a fish.
The plan is to leave Djupivogur tonight, do grocery shopping in Seydisfjordur & get back my shotgun & ammo from Customs, then head northwest into the ice.

I can’t wait to see the pics from the Greenland leg. What an epic trip and crew.
ReplyDeleteGood to see the crew all together - best of luck and see you back in I eland on your return
ReplyDeleteI'm with Teddy and crew in spirit. As usual, I find the entries well put and often chuckle-worthy. Best of luck and I really do wish I was there in reality, rather than only in spirit. Enjoy the sea, enjoy the sail, enjoy the company, and enjoy life onboard and off.
